Young Stewards Camp

Weeks 5 & 7: Coastal Ecology

During weeks 5 & 7* of the Young Stewards Program, campers will discover barrier island ecosystems by studying shore birds, collecting marine organisms, and hiking a maritime forest. This week is designed to give campers hands-on opportunities to investigate our coastal heritage and understand the importance of protecting this valuable natural resource.  In addition to off-farm trips, Monday and Friday will be spent on the farm exploring Fernbrook and making connections with the natural world.

In the past we have:

  • Toured a tidal marsh in kayaks with the Nature Center of Cape May.
  • Studied the ecology of Sandy Hook Bay with a Monmouth County Park Naturalist.
  • Caught crabs at Berkley Township County Park and returned to Fernbrook to cook up our catch.
  • Explored Cattus Island State Park.
  • Searched for birds at Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge.
  • Visited the NJ Museum of Maritime History.
  • Seined and explored Sandy Hook Bay with the Marine Science Consortium.

*In past summers the Coastal Ecology themed weeks have been so popular, we have decided to offer it twice throughout the summer. We will offer different day trips from week 5 to week 7 in case there are campers that would like to participate in both weeks.
